Industrial Ethernet of the three musketeers of ——EtherNet / IP

1. What is a EtherNet / IP?

EtherNet / IP is the name of the General Industrial Agreement (CIP) with standard Ethernet (IEEE 802.3 and TCP / IP protocol suite).

EtherNet / IP was launched in 2001 and has now become the most mature, mature and complete industrial agreement

EtherNet / IP is the network in which members of the following families perform CIP (Figure 1).

The EtherNet / IP and the CIP are managed by the ODVA. ODVA publishes the EtherNet / IP ™ specification and helps

Compliance is ensured by consistency testing.

DeviceNet, CompoNet & ControlNet share the same CIP application layer with EtherNet/IP)

2. What is a CIP?

Common Industrial Protocol (CIP) is a media-independent, connectivity-based, object-oriented protocol designed for automated applications. CIP provides users with a unified communication architecture for the entire manufacturing enterprise.

"IP" in "EtherNet / IP" refers to the Industrial Protocol (Industrial Agreement). EtherNet / IP utilizes CIP on the standard IEEE 802.3 and TCP / IP protocol suite (Figure 2).

3. What is an ODVA?

ODVA is an international association with members from the world's leading automation companies. Overall, the ODVA vs

Its members support the universal protocol-based Network Technology Industry Protocol (CIP ™).

The ODVA itself was founded in 1995 as a company by Rockwell Automation (Rockwell. USA), Cisco (Cisco. USA), Schneider Electric (Schneider. France), Omron (Omron. Japan) and Bosch Rexroth (Bosch Rexroth. Germany) and a consortium of automation companies designed to promote open and interoperable communication for industrial automation. According to ODVA, EtherNet / IP is the leader in industrial Ethernet adoption, with a 25% market share in 2017 and 28% in 2018.

 Fight for the world

In 2023, PROFINET and EtherNet / IP tied for 18% each, and EtherCAT followed with 12%.

In Europe and the Middle East, EtherNet / IP, PROFINET, and EtherCAT took the lead, followed by PROFIBUS and Modbus-TCP. The US market is dominated by EtherNet / IP, EtherCAT has strong momentum and expanding market share. The Asian market is relatively differentiated, with PROFINET having the highest market share, followed by EtherNet / IP, while CC-Link / CC-Link IE Field, EtherCAT, PROFIBUS and Modbus (RTU / TCP) are also strong competitors.
